Getting my bearings from Module 1, Module 2 went by much more smoothly. This module I learned how to take data from a wide area, such as the state of Florida, and pinpoint the exact features I wanted to highlight from them to showcase a more local area. For this exercise I was able to take the county lines, major cities, major rivers, and interstates from the state of Florida and manipulate them to only be featured in Escambia County.
My map shows Escambia County in its entirety, with the major rivers and interstate that are within its bounds present. The map also includes the major cities within Escambia County, however I selected just the ones closely surrounding the location of UWF's main campus in order to better help orient the viewer. Perhaps the most interesting feature of my layout is inset map of Florida, which shows all of Florida's county lines with Escambia county highlighted in a bright red color compared to the neutral tone of the rest of the state. This helps the viewer further orient themselves to the location of the main map.
I also learned how to implement key map elements such as title, scale bar, north arrow, and legend. I was able to use these tools to hopefully guide the viewer through the contents of my map without detracting from the datum.
I would like to personally thank Michael Lucas for his timely and masterful response to Fiona Southwell in the Module 2 Help Forum on the course site. Fiona experienced a roadblock identical to mine and her cogent explanation of the issue allowed Michael to provide excellent resources and steps to resolve the issue. I look forward to continuing my study and practice of GIS mapping in the next module and I have provided a screenshot of my map from this module below!
