GIS Certificate Capstone - Blog Post #1 - Course Intentions

I am currently employed full-time as an Environmental Scientist at Bio-Tech Consulting, where I conduct wetland delineations, environmental assessments, and species surveys across a range of development projects. As I continue to grow in this role, I’m particularly focused on enhancing how we leverage Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in our work.

One of my primary goals is to help modernize and improve the accuracy of GIS-derived wetland delineations by incorporating high-resolution satellite imagery and updated geospatial tools. Specifically, I’m advocating for a transition from ArcMap to ArcGIS Pro within our workflows. ArcGIS Pro offers advanced capabilities and streamlined tools that will allow us to produce more precise, data-driven environmental maps and analyses—ultimately strengthening the scientific integrity and efficiency of our reporting.

To support this professional growth, I’ve become a member of NEFGIS (Northeast Florida GIS User Group), a regional network focused on geospatial topics relevant to my hometown and neighboring communities. NEFGIS provides an excellent forum for exchanging questions, ideas, and best practices, and I’m excited to tap into this resource as I continue building my GIS skills and bringing value to my team at Bio-Tech Consulting.

GIS is an increasingly essential tool in environmental science, and I’m committed to staying at the forefront of its application in our field.
