In my capstone course, I was challenged to celebrate GIS day by leading a discussion that shares the benefits and capabilities of GIS. I structured my GIS day event as an opportunity to educate and excite my coworkers on the benefits of ArcGIS Pro, as many of them only have experience with ArcMap. As a company, we are planning to fully switch over soon, especially with ArcMap being retired by ESRI coming in 2026. I began by highlighting the general benefits of ArcGIS Pro regarding speed and user interface improvements compared to ArcMap. I also gave technical instructions on how to complete common GIS tasks we are faced with on a regular basis via ArcGIS Pro. This included how to display XY data from a table created in Excel, amongst other processes. Finally, I showed my coworkers how to convert an ArcMap .mxd files to a ArcGIS Pro .aprx file utilizing both the Pro interface and a Python script. It was a good way to collaborate with coworkers and test my own knowledge by answering questions. This took place during work hours and was an informal discussion.
